Choosing tooth pitch for a band saw blade for wood

How to choose the correct tooth size for band saw blades for cutting wood and similar materials? We will advise you.

Pitch of a woodworking band saw blade
Pitch of a woodworking band saw blade

The tooth pitch is indicated as TPI – Teeth Per Inch.
This is the number of teeth per one inch, a unit used in English-speaking countries corresponding to 25.4 mm. A pitch of TPI 2 therefore denotes a distance between tips of 13 mm, while a pitch of TPI 14 is only 1.8 mm. The general rule is that the higher the number, the smaller the tooth.

  • Small teeth are suitable for hard materials and for a clean, fine cut.
  • Large teeth are used for coarse cutting of material and for soft materials.
  • If you use too fine a tooth for the cut, the gullets will clog up with sawdust and the cutting resistance will increase; the blade will not feed properly into the cut and will undercut (wander).
  • If, on the other hand, you use too coarse a tooth, the cut will be rough and the teeth will tear out the fibres.

  • TPI 2, 3, 4: They are used for medium to rough cuts with diameters from 25–100 mm.
  • TPI 6, 8: The ideal tooth for cutting dry wood, hardwood, plywood, plastic and composite materials with diameters from 10–25 mm.
  • TPI 10, 14: A very fine tooth for the finest contour cutting of wood, plastic and composite materials up to 10 mm in diameter and for cutting non-ferrous metals up to 30 mm in diameter.

Hello, I have a Hammer n2-38 saw and I would like to cut hardwoods (olive and oak) with thicknesses that could reach 15 cm in extreme cases, can you recommend the most suitable blades?
DUDRSAW

Good morning,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Hammer N2-38 and cutting hardwoods such as olive and oak, with thicknesses up to approximately 150 mm.
For your application, we can recommend two solutions:
1 The more economical variant
Flexback 3556 × 19 × 0.8 mm – TPI 3 Hook
This is a high-quality carbon steel band saw blade with hardened teeth. The 3 TPI pitch and the Hook tooth shape are suitable for greater cutting heights and for hard materials. This blade is a cost-effective solution and is suitable for cutting oak and olive wood. However, it is important to consider that this is a blade with hardened teeth, so its lifespan when cutting very hard woods will be shorter than the version with carbide teeth.
2 The best solution for your use
Carbide Wood 3556 × 20 × 0.6 mm – TPI 1.5–2.0
We believe this is the ideal solution for your case. This blade is equipped with carbide teeth, which guarantee a cutting life many times longer than the Flexback with hardened teeth, especially when cutting hard and dense woods such as oak and olive.
Key advantages:
- very long lifespan
- narrow kerf of approximately 1.2 mm – less material waste
- very clean cut due to non-set teeth – each carbide tooth removes the entire chip width (in traditional blades, the cut width is achieved progressively by three teeth – left, right, and straight)
To see the cutting quality, we recommend the video where Carbide Wood cuts walnut wood.

Good day, I bought a Parkside bandsaw from Lidl for DIY. I wanted to ask - I am cutting beech approx. 50mm square timber, but the cut (blade) always deflects at the beginning and creates a wave, I cannot follow the line properly and it doesn't matter if I have the fence attached or not... the cut is simply always slightly curved at the beginning. Could you advise me what to do about it? I think it's because of the original blade from the saw's packaging, that I should choose a different blade variant. Thank you very much for the advice. And I wish you a wonderful day. Filip Bartek

Good day,
I recommend a saw blade with a larger pitch, the original one supplied has approx. 10 teeth per inch, which corresponds to a
cutting height of 10mm. If you only make straight cuts, I also recommend a wider blade, a 13mm blade will fit your saw at most.

I therefore recommend the blade in the link

Hello, can I order three belts with different teeth for the Parkside band saw from you, because the Parkside ones keep breaking, I don't know if it's the belt or the band saw, and how good are your belts, are they better than Parkside's?
DUDRSAW

Hello, of course...
Buy and try. On one hand, you will find out what suits you, on the other hand, our belts are much better quality than what Parkside packs for trying out a new saw.

Can one blade be used for thinner and thicker materials, and can it cut straight and curves, or is there a different blade for each dimension? If you can help me, I am interested in this regarding the Parkside bandsaw for wood, as the blades have been tearing so far and I don't know which ones to use anymore. Thank you!

Hello, you need different types of bandsaws for this. I recommend you read this article https://www.dudrsaw.eu/technical-articles-and-advice/how-to-choose-a-band-saw-blade-for-wood-2 For this Parkside saw - the original bands are bad - try ordering from us, they will last longer translated by google.translate

Good morning, I need some advice. I have a Recordpower bs 350s saw and I cut hardwood. I need something to cut the material. 19 mm, but ideally with the cleanest possible cut. Can you recommend something? Thank you Tomáš Dejmal

Good morning, use one of the blades Flexback 2629x19x0.8 mm. Choose the pitch according to the cutting height, which is listed under the pitch. Unfortunately, we currently lack the TPI 3 and 4 hook pitch, which we are stocking. If you want a really smooth cut, we recommend trying a saw blade that has carbide teeth instead of standard teeth, and the cut is perfectly smooth - Carbide Wood 2629x20x0.6 mm TPI 1.5-2.

Good luck, regards Dudr Saw team.
