Every band saw blade from our company Dudr Saw is labelled with a tag showing its technical parameters. But what do these details mean? What is the difference between the designations Regular, Hook and Skip? Which parameters are optional and which are fixed? Our practical guide, including photo and video examples, will explain everything. And if you have any further questions, you can contact us in the discussion below the article.

The technical parameters of the band saw blade are given on the first line of the label:

  1. Band saw blade width: this is the width of the strip steel from which the blade is made, measured from the back edge to the tooth tips. We select this value according to whether we want to cut straight cuts or contours. A wide blade is suitable for straight cuts, a narrow blade for cutting shapes. More here.
  2. Strip thickness: this is the thickness of the band saw blade. This value is always fixed for a given blade width and therefore we do not select it.
  3. Band saw blade length: this is the length of the welded blade in millimetres. This value is specified by the band saw manufacturer and is always fixed – if you order a different length, the blade will not fit your band saw. We weld blades to length, so we can make a band saw blade for you in any length.
  4. Teeth per inch: this is the tooth size and the distance between tooth tips. In our field it is customary to state it as the number of teeth per one inch (1 inch = 2,54 cm). The smaller the number, the larger the tooth. We must choose this value according to what we want to cut. Large diameters, for example solid round bar, beams and thick boards, must be cut with large teeth (TPI 2, TPI 3 and TPI 4). Medium teeth (TPI 6 and TPI 8) are suitable for cutting standard boards 10–25 mm thick. And the smallest teeth (TPI 10 and TPI 14) are suitable for cutting thin boards, laminate and plywood up to 10 mm thick. More about choosing tooth pitch here.
  5. Tooth form: this is the tooth geometry selected by the manufacturer. It is fixed for a given tooth size (pitch) in a given width and therefore we do not select it. More about tooth forms here.
